It was 25 years ago, in July 1987 that an amateur British archaeologist armed with a metal detector, a major in the British army called Tony Clunn, discovered three slingshots. This turned out to be the site of the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, the battle in AD9 that saw three Roman legions wiped out by the Germanic leader Arminius.
The Mindener Tageblatt has a piece about the celebrations that kick off from October 3:
"Kalkriese ist die erste antike Feldschlacht Europas, die archäologisch erforscht wurde, das Gesamtkonzept von Museum und Park Kalkriese wurde als erstes archäologisches Museum mit dem Europa Nostra Award als europäisches Kulturerbe ausgezeichnet und Kulturerbe ausgezeichnet und mehr als eine Millionen Besucher haben seit der Eröffnung des Museums den Ort der Varusschlacht besucht. Wir haben also genug Gründe zum Feiern" freut sich Dr. Joseph Rottmann, Geschäftsführer der Varusschlacht im Osnabrücker Land.
