I had intended to write more fully about this, but the day is escaping from me. Following on from the announcement by culture secretary Fiona Hyslop on July 4 that the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) was to be swallowed up by Historic Scotland, the commissioners from the RCAHMS have responded:
We are disappointed by the decision. We believe the reconstituted NDPB [non-departmental public body] option established in primary legislation, placing RCAHMS on a similar footing to other National Collections, would have best protected the functions and remit of the Commission, but we accept the Cabinet Secretary's right to decide otherwise.
