Haltern remains for me one of the most fascinating sites in Germany. On the banks of the Lippe and abandoned pretty soon after the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in AD9, the museum is wonderful.
A lovely story has been picked up by some of the German press about the analysis of some 2,000 amphorae from the site. Produce, came to Haltern from all over the Mediterranean, including Italy and North Africa. Impressive logistics. The tabloid, the Bild, ran this as Romans preferred to drink their own local wine:
Die Römer haben in ihrem Lager nördlich der Ruhr vor 2000 Jahren Wein aus dem Süden getrunken. Spezialisten untersuchten 2000 historische Krügen und Gefäße aus dem Römerlager Haltern am See und kamen zu dem Schluss, dass sich die Legionäre unter anderem Wein und Olivenöl in Amphoren liefern ließen. Das berichtete der Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) am Freitag.

Manche Amphorentypen aus einer deutlich früheren Zeit stammen, als bislang vermutet, nämlich schon aus dem 1. Jahrzehnt nach Christi Geburt - bislang wurde angenommen, dass sie zu dieser Zeit noch nicht produziert wurden.
