The word of the week is Nighthawking

One of the themes of the week has been the plundering of sites by metal detectorists, aka nighthawks thanks to the publication earlier in the week of the Nighthawking survey by English heritage. There are good overviews of the current brou ha-ha at Looting Matters (here and here) and passim at Portable Antiquity Collecting and Heritage Issues.

No where seems immune. Trimontium in Scotland has been hit (story in the Scotsman); Rousse in Bulgarian (story in the Sofia Echo); the Roman fort at Kirmington (Scunthorpe Telegraph); and Suffolk (BBC).
